Muscle Groups Activated:
Lower Body (Legs):
Quadriceps (Front of Thigh): Primary movers during the drive phase, extending the knees as you push off the footrests.
Hamstrings (Back of Thigh): Assist in knee flexion during the recovery and contribute to leg drive at the start of the stroke.
Glutes (Buttocks): Power the hip extension during the drive, providing significant force for the stroke.
Calves (Gastrocnemius and Soleus): Engaged during the drive to point the toes (plantarflexion) and stabilise the ankles.
Core (Torso):
Rectus Abdominis and Obliques: Stabilise the torso and maintain posture, especially during the drive and when leaning back slightly at the end of the stroke.
Erector Spinae (Lower Back): Support spinal alignment and assist in the slight backward lean during the drive.
Transverse Abdominis: Engages for core stability, preventing excessive spinal movement and aiding power transfer from legs to upper body.
Upper Body (Back, Shoulders, Arms):
Latissimus Dorsi (Upper Back): Primary muscle for pulling the handle toward the body during the drive, contributing to the rowing motion.
Rhomboids and Trapezius (Upper Back/Shoulders): Stabilise the shoulder blades and assist in retracting them during the pull.
Deltoids (Shoulders): Support arm movement and stabilise the shoulder joint during the drive and recovery.
Biceps Brachii (Front of Upper Arm): Flex the elbows to pull the handle toward the torso at the end of the drive.
Triceps Brachii (Back of Upper Arm): Assist in arm extension during the recovery phase as the handle returns to the starting position.
Forearm Muscles (Flexors and Extensors): Control grip on the handle and stabilise wrist movements throughout the stroke.
Muscle Engagement by Rowing Phase
Drive Phase (Power Generation):
Begins with leg push (quads, glutes, hamstrings, calves).
Core engages to stabilise and transfer power (rectus abdominis, obliques, erector spinae).
Upper body finishes the stroke with a pull (lats, rhomboids, trapezius, biceps, deltoids, forearms).
Approximately 60% of power comes from legs, 20% from core, and 20% from upper body.
Recovery Phase (Return to Start):
Core stabilises as the torso leans forward (rectus abdominis, obliques).
Hamstrings and hip flexors assist in sliding the seat forward.
Triceps and forearms extend the arms to return the handle.
Calves adjust foot positioning for the next stroke.
Space Required for Use: 274 cm (L) x 122 cm - Approx.
Weight: 26 kg - Approx
